Zig Zag Quilt
Unknown Quilt Maker
Circa 1870
80 x 88 inches
Found, and probably made, in North Carolina
My first thought upon seeing this stunning quilt was its graphic similarity to the "Navajo Zig Zag" design element seen in many Navajo rugs, blankets, and other items. (See last three photos).
But the graphics are only part of the glory of this 19th century Southern quilt. Check out the super dense hand quilting, executed in very narrow parallel lines, echoing and amplifying the overall zig-zaggy design.
Another unusual feature is the piping inserted just inside the cheddar, separately applied binding. We usually see that in very early quilts, and even then not very often. While the piping has wear, it does not detract from the visual impact of the quilt.
