Family Records Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker(s)
Circa 1850
72 x 88 inches
Origin Unknown; Midwest United States
In Near-Perfect Condition, this mid-19th-century cotton quilt is a marvelous, carefully kept treasure by the members of two American families, united by marriage.
A superb example of a rarity -- a quilt serving as a family record! Many families kept such records, but almost always on paper. Follow the vital stats on two families that intermarried, the Jones and Fallis families. They moved from New York State to the Midwest, with one family member ending up in California. (More complete genealogy records provided to the new owner, or any interested person.)
Professionally washed, thin and lightweight. The hand appliquéd letters and numerals are expertly sewn, and the hand quilting is as fine and elaborate as one could hope. The appliquéd vining border is a typical way of finishing in the 1850's era. 1850 is the last date in applique.
But -- looking very closely, there is black quilting thread marking the death dates of those who died after the quilt was completed. See the last photo to h see how it was done.
We don't know how it got out of the family, but now that it has, we are honored to be able to offer it to its next owner who will hopefully treasure it as we have.
