Carpenters Wheel Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
61 x 70 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in California
American women were so inventive when it came to their quilts! At the end of the 19th century a quilt maker chose a traditional design, "Carpenter's Wheel," and chose to split the middle square into a large half square triangle, dark and light. S/he added Sawtooth borders on the two long sides. She finished the quilt with separately applied printed cotton binding.
In very good, washed condition. A few of the fabrics have started shredding, but the quilt is generally strong and sturdy, and shows well. It i quite narrow which makes it a good candidate for hanging on a wall or folding at the end of a bed or in a cupboard.
