Capital T Quilt
Unidentified Quilt Maker
Circa 1890
67 x 82 inches
Origin Unknown; Found in New York State
Some loyal members of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) made quilt featuring the "Capital T" to show their alliance to the popular late 19th and early 20th century progressive organization promoting, among other things, "Temperance."
Others liked that letter as it represented their family's surname. Still others simply liked the geometry of the pieced design. We've shown it here both vertically and horizontally, as the maker had her "T" blocks facing one another.
This example, recently professionally washed, is in Excellent Condition. It is thin and lightweight, and hand quilted in simple Fans or Clamshell. The printed fabrics represent the kind of cottons that were widely available to American women at the ned of the 19th century -- here placed on a dotted ground that gives it appealing movement and vitality.
