Quilts with borders on three sides were quite common in the 19th century. Probably a matter of practicality -- why make a border where pillows would cover it anyway ??
I've presented photos of this quilt set both horizontally and vertically. My eye does not mind the asymmetry of of the vertical orientation, so I like them both! The Good News? You can hang it any way you wish. Or use it on a bed, the way it was intended. Or .. fold it. It will be yours to decide.
This "Rocky Road" design is a forerunner of a design commonly known as "New York Beauty" -- not its original name, but one given it by a batting company.
Hand quilted, this is in very good condition, with a few minor issues: The separately applied red cotton binding has begun to wear in places, and I see a couple of small, light discolorations. (See first detail shot below, lower left.)
The quilt has both been published and has appeared in some quilt exhibitions. It's a terrific example of its type.
