Folk Art Crazy Quilt Top
Unidentified Quilt Maker(s)
Circa 1888
64 x 78 inches
Origin Unknown; found in South Carolina
My first photo is of the block that truly distinguishes this folky, hand-embroidered (primarily wool) Crazy Quilt. It reads: Feb. THE 8th, 1888 Mother laid to Rest
The maker(s) embroidered over every single seam, as well as within each of the twenty blocks. So many initials, and embroidered names; women's names. Each name in a different handwriting style. A great piece to research...
I love that the "Laid to Rest" block is surrounded everywhere with such colorful, fanciful, decorative embroidery. The quilt feels happy. A contradiction? Not necessarily. Sometimes we can feel joy when a loved one is truly "laid to rest."
Made on foundation, this is a top only. The edges remain unfinished. Though the back (muslin squares) has some staining, the front is in exceptionally great condition.
An exceptional example of a turn of the century Crazy Quilt -- well designed, beautifully executed, and personal in a very moving way.
